Oral Wegovy Adoption Outpaces Foundayo as Brand Familiarity Drives Early Prescribing Patterns

Novo Nordisk’s new weight-loss pill is quickly moving ahead of Eli Lilly’s competitor, and experts say the reason is simple: doctors trust what they already know. Even though Eli Lilly launched its own pill, Foundayo, soon after Novo Nordisk introduced the oral version of Wegovy, many doctors are continuing with the familiar brand. Data from market research firm Spherix Global Insights suggests that physician familiarity with Wegovy is creating a major difference in prescribing habits. Analyst Jim Hickey identified this pattern after surveying 50 primary care doctors and 50 endocrinologists about their treatment decisions.

Novo Nordisk launched its oral Wegovy pill in January 2026. Many patients were already familiar with injectable Wegovy for weight management and type 2 diabetes. Because of this, doctors already understood the active ingredient and its effects. This existing trust helped the pill gain a strong early advantage.

Eli Lilly launched Foundayo in April 2026. Unlike Wegovy, Foundayo uses a new molecule called orforglipron. It is not simply a pill version of a medication doctors already prescribe, such as Lilly’s popular injections Mounjaro or Zepbound. As a result, some doctors are taking more time to become comfortable with the new treatment option.

Prescription data shows a large difference between the two medications. Recent IQVIA tracking found that oral Wegovy reached around 159,000 prescriptions in one week. Foundayo recorded just under 20,000 prescriptions during the same period. However, Wegovy had been available for 22 weeks, while Foundayo had only been on the market for nine weeks. Experts also note that these figures may not include many online telehealth prescriptions because the data mainly covers traditional pharmacies.

Novo Nordisk reports that its pill has passed three million prescriptions since its January launch. Most prescriptions went to patients who had never used this type of medication before. This suggests that a pill option may appeal to people who want weight-loss treatment but prefer not to use injections. The data also shows that primary care doctors are prescribing Wegovy pills faster than specialists, despite pharmaceutical companies often focusing their outreach on specialists.

Doctors are now comparing how the two pills perform in everyday use and how future research may influence treatment choices. Oral Wegovy must be taken on an empty stomach with limited water and a waiting period before food or other medicines. These requirements may be challenging for some patients. Eli Lilly is presenting Foundayo as a simpler option because it does not have the same food and water restrictions.

At the moment, no official head-to-head clinical trial has confirmed which pill provides better weight-loss results. Future studies will examine weight changes, side effects, treatment continuation, and how many patients switch from injections to pills. Both medications require a prescription and medical supervision. Patients should discuss possible stomach-related side effects, safety concerns, and research findings with their healthcare provider before starting treatment.
