Novo Nordisk Gets EU Backing for Wegovy Pill, Beats Eli Lilly to the Punch

European drug regulators handed Novo Nordisk a major win. Specifically, the date was May 22, 2026. The Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) works under the European Medicines Agency (EMA). Notably, it backed once-daily oral semaglutide 25 mg, branded as the Wegovy pill, to help adults reduce and maintain body weight. As a result, this marks the first oral GLP-1 drug to clear this hurdle in Europe. Consequently, Novo Nordisk now leads a race its competitors are still struggling to enter.

Moreover, the clinical evidence behind this decision is strong. Researchers ran the OASIS 4 trial, a 64-week Phase 3b study. They tested the pill against a placebo in 307 adults living with obesity or overweight, each with at least one additional health condition. Furthermore, patients lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight. That makes it the strongest oral GLP-1 treatment CHMP has recommended for weight management in Europe. In addition, the label includes cardiovascular protection data. Thus, it confirms the drug cuts the risk of serious heart events.

Indeed, one detail separates this drug from everything else in its class. Wegovy pill carries no drug-drug restrictions in its label. Therefore, doctors can prescribe it freely. Accordingly, they need not worry about conflicts with other medications a patient already takes. For instance, people managing obesity alongside type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease benefit greatly from that flexibility. Meanwhile, most oral drugs carry interaction warnings. Hence, this clean label genuinely sets the Wegovy pill apart.

However, the road to full approval still has one step left. Specifically, the European Commission must issue a formal decision first. That step always follows a positive CHMP opinion. Nevertheless, Novo Nordisk already plans to roll out the pill in select markets outside the United States in the second half of 2026. Furthermore, the company builds on its FDA approval secured in December 2025. As a result, it is clearly moving fast to lock in its lead before rivals catch up.

Similarly, the competitive picture tilts in Novo Nordisk’s favor right now. Notably, Eli Lilly’s oral obesity drug has not yet received a positive EMA opinion. Therefore, Novo Nordisk is set to be the first to market in Europe with an oral weight-loss pill. In contrast, in the injectable space, Lilly’s tirzepatide sells as Mounjaro. It has held EMA approval for weight management since mid-2024. Thus, it remains the leading competing product across both the US and European markets. Accordingly, Novo Nordisk sees the oral pill segment as its clearest path to winning back lost ground.

Meanwhile, early signals from the United States point to strong patient interest. Likewise, early prescription data for oral weight-loss tablets in the US look encouraging. Specifically, pills appear to draw in new patients. Moreover, they do not simply pull patients away from injections. In addition, analysts forecast the obesity drug market will reach $150 billion in annual sales within the next decade. Indeed, whoever leads the oral GLP-1 market in Europe today will likely shape the treatment landscape for years to come
