Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly Clash Over Oral GLP-1 Supremacy With New Obesity Trial Data

Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are locked in a major battle to lead the market for weight loss pills. Both companies shared new study results this week at a large medical meeting. This moment marks a big shift in how doctors might treat obesity in the future. Each company claims its own daily pill offers the best long term results for patients.

Novo Nordisk shared new details from its recent OASIS 4 clinical trial. They found that some patients responded very quickly to the treatment. These “early responders” lost 10 percent of their body weight in just 16 weeks. Building on this, those same patients went on to lose over 21 percent of their weight after a year.

Other people in the study lost about 11 percent of their weight. Novo Nordisk said these results are still very helpful for people struggling with obesity. However, the study shows that people react differently to these types of medicines. In light of this, doctors will need to watch how each person progresses on the pill.

The study also looked at how the medicine helps people move better. Over 77 percent of patients with physical limits saw a big boost in their mobility. They found it easier to bend over, stand up, and stay active throughout the day. Accordingly, this was nearly double the improvement seen in the group taking a dummy pill.

The group not taking the real medicine only saw a 42 percent improvement. This gap shows that the drug does more than just lower a number on the scale. Furthermore, the data suggests that losing weight this way helps people feel more independent. Patients said they were much happier with their ability to handle daily physical chores.

Novo Nordisk also compared its pill directly against a rival drug from Lilly. Their analysis claimed that their pill led to more total weight loss. It also suggested that the rival pill caused more people to stop treatment early. Moreover, many patients quit the other drug because the side effects were too hard to handle.

Sales for the Novo Nordisk pill are already moving very fast. The company made nearly 350 million dollars from the drug in just three months. They called this start “unprecedented” for a new weight loss medicine. Meanwhile, Lilly is working hard to prove its own oral treatment works just as well.

Lilly shared its own data focused on how patients keep weight off. They looked at people who switched from injections to a daily pill. The results showed that these patients kept almost all their weight loss for a full year. Therefore, the company believes its pill is perfect for people who want to stay slim.

One group of patients only gained back about two pounds after switching. Another group using the new pill gained back roughly 11 pounds over the year. Lilly says this is a great way to help people manage their health long-term. Given this, the pill could become a steady option after a patient finishes their shots.

A second study confirmed that patients stayed successful when lowering their dose. These trials solve a big problem because many people gain weight back after stopping injections. Along with this, the data helps doctors plan out better care for their patients. Lilly is moving quickly because its other weight loss drugs are already selling fast.

The competition between these two giants is helping to create more medical choices. Lilly currently leads in total sales, but the race for the best pill is far from over. Consequently, both firms are spending billions to win over doctors and patients alike. This battle will likely change how the world handles weight loss for years to come.
