New Eli Lilly Weight-Loss Therapy Achieves Nearly 30% Reduction in Body Weight

Health experts are buzzing about a new injectable medication called retatrutide. Recent study results show this drug helps people lose more weight than almost any other medicine currently on the market. In a long-term trial, patients lost an average of 28% of their total body weight over about a year and a half. This is a massive jump compared to older treatments.

The drug works by using a “triple-action” method. While popular shots like Ozempic or Mounjaro target one or two hunger hormones, retatrutide targets three. It mimics hormones called GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon all at once. By hitting three different targets in the body, it settles hunger and changes how the body burns energy. This broad approach leads to deeper weight loss.

In the latest large-scale study, over 2,300 adults with obesity participated. Those who took the highest dose saw incredible changes. Nearly half of the group lost at least 30% of their starting weight. Doctors find this number particularly exciting because that level of success is usually only seen after weight loss surgery. It proves that medicine is catching up to more invasive procedures.

The researchers also looked at how the drug affects people with different health backgrounds. While this specific study focused on people without diabetes, earlier tests showed it also helps those with type 2 diabetes lose significant weight. Even though the results were slightly lower for diabetic patients, the drug remained highly effective. This consistency gives doctors hope for a wide range of patients.

Like most weight-loss shots, this drug does have some side effects. Most people in the study reported stomach issues like nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. A few people also experienced a strange tingling skin sensation or mild colds. However, the company making the drug noted that these issues are common for this type of medication. Most patients found the side effects manageable.

Because the data is so strong, the manufacturer is now preparing to ask the government for permission to sell the drug. National health agencies will spend the coming months reviewing the safety records and trial results. If the regulators agree that the drug is safe and effective, it could receive a “priority” status. This would speed up the time it takes to get into pharmacies.

This new wave of medicine is changing how we think about public health. Having a pill or a shot that works as well as surgery gives millions of people more options. As these drugs become available, health systems will need to update their rules on who can get them. Ultimately, retatrutide could become a standard tool for managing severe weight issues.
