The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized oral semaglutide, expanding GLP-1 treatment beyond injections. These tablets add options for chronic weight management and glycemic control in type 2 diabetes. As of February 2026, Wegovy tablets and two oral diabetes formulations hold FDA authorization.
Semaglutide acts as a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Clinicians already use the same active ingredient in several injectable products. In view of this, oral formulations mainly change delivery, not the core molecule.
The FDA approved Wegovy, a pill for chronic weight management in adults, on December 22, 2025. Novo Nordisk launched a 25 mg once-daily tablet in early January 2026, priced at $149 per month. OASIS 4 results supported approval, showing about 13.6% mean weight loss at 64 weeks.
Oral semaglutide for type 2 diabetes has been available since 2019 under the Rybelsus brand. To be precise, dosing includes 3 mg, 7 mg, and 14 mg tablets for glycemic management. Clinicians have also used Rybelsus off-label for weight loss.

In early February 2026, the FDA authorized an Ozempic-branded oral formulation at 1.5 mg, 4 mg, and 9 mg. Novo Nordisk has planned a second-quarter 2026 launch for the Ozempic pill. Consequently, clinicians may see clearer brand alignment across semaglutide products.
The FDA supported the Ozempic pill decision with bioequivalence evidence and the established Rybelsus clinical program. That approach signals regulatory continuity across oral semaglutide products. Nevertheless, dose strengths and labeling still shape how clinicians select therapy.
Oral delivery created a central scientific hurdle because the gastrointestinal tract breaks down peptide drugs. Notably, oral semaglutide shows only 0.4% to 1% bioavailability without a specialized formulation. In light of this, manufacturers paired semaglutide with an absorption enhancer called SNAC.
SNAC helps protect semaglutide and supports uptake through the stomach lining. Moreover, SNAC temporarily changes local conditions to improve epithelial transport into the bloodstream. Meanwhile, permeability returns to baseline about 30 minutes after dosing.
The Wegovy pill uses a stepwise titration schedule that increases the dose over time. Accordingly, dosing moves from 1.5 mg daily for days 1 to 30 to 4 mg, then 9 mg, then 25 mg. This structured escalation aims to support tolerability during initiation.
Patients must take the tablet on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of water. They must wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything besides water. They must also wait 30 minutes before taking other oral medications.
Eligibility for Wegovy tablets follows body mass index thresholds and weight-related comorbidity criteria. Clinicians prescribe the medication with reduced-calorie diets and increased physical activity. Labeling also restricts use during pregnancy or breastfeeding and in MTC or MEN2 risk.
Clinicians may select oral therapy for patients who avoid injections or prefer daily routines. Nevertheless, injectable GLP-1 agents may provide more consistent exposure for some patients. Therefore, clinicians weigh adherence, comorbidities, tolerability, logistics, and cost-access constraints.
