Amazon One Medical Launches New GLP-1 Weight Loss Program With Direct Pharmacy Delivery

Amazon just launched a comprehensive weight management program through its primary care branch, Amazon One Medical. The new platform pairs expert medical consultations with fast prescription delivery from Amazon Pharmacy. Instead of handing out quick, episodic prescriptions, Amazon treats severe obesity as a chronic disease that needs steady, long-term care.

The program gives patients access to popular GLP-1 weight-loss drugs. Doctors prescribe established brand names like Wegovy, the new oral drug Foundayo, and Zepbound. If patients have insurance, these medications can cost as little as $25 a month. Meanwhile, for those paying cash, oral pills start at $149 a month, and injectables run about $299.

Medical teams keep a close eye on patient safety from day one. Clinicians review a patient’s body mass index and medical history to determine whether GLP-1 drugs are a good fit. From there, doctors choose the right medication and smoothly adjust the dosage as the patient responds to the treatment. Furthermore, they use these regular visits to actively manage related health issues like high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

Right now, this service operates out of more than 200 primary care offices across the country. Plus, the integrated pharmacy network delivers medications directly to patients’ doors, often on the very same day. Even if patients do not use Amazon One Medical for regular care, they can still get fast prescription renewals. They simply pay a flat fee of $29 for a message consultation or $49 for a video call.

Obesity currently affects over 40 percent of adults and costs the healthcare system billions each year. Unfortunately, scattered medical care often leaves patients struggling with poor results. In fact, doctors note that patients transferring from quick-fix clinics sometimes arrive malnourished or taking the completely wrong dose. Therefore, Amazon designed this structured system specifically to prevent those dangerous medical errors.

This strategic move directly answers similar programs launched by retail giants like Walmart. Unsurprisingly, the major announcement quickly caused stock prices to drop for competing telehealth companies like Hims & Hers Health. Investors clearly see Amazon as a massive threat to smaller weight-loss platforms. Moving forward, anticipated changes to Medicare rules could shake up this booming market even more.
